EAST ISLIP WINS GRAY-FITZGERALD TOURNAMENT AT SAYVILLE

REDMEN CROWN FIVE CHAMPIONS

Defending tournament champion Brentwood (262 points) finished ahead of East Islip (203),  Connetquot (193), Sayville (185) and Smithtown East (144) at the 2021 Gray-Fitzgerald Holiday Tournament. Brentwood was the Suffolk dual meet champion and Sayville won their first ever Suffolk tournament championship. EI, the League V champion  is loaded with a well-balanced line-up and boasts state finalist and top-ranked junior Sebastian Regis at 285. Connetquot is reigning League III champion, East Meadow and Smithtown East also have solid teams.

Those six top tier teams should battle for the 2022 team title.

Returning tournament champions include the Brentwood lightweight tandem of Jason Euceda (110 pounds) and Jason Kwaak (132). East Islip hasLogan Alfalla (132) and Justin Shayew (138). Smithtown East has top-ranked Michael Sanchez in the 189-pound class.

The marquee match for the championship finals will be the 132-pound gold medal match. Brentwood's top-seeded  Jason Kwaak will be pitted against Sayville's Leo Mongiello. Kwaak advanced via a solid 9-0 major decision vs Luke Obert-Thorn (Connetquot). Mongiello was embroiled in a back-and-forth battle with Nassau county champion Evan Shriberg (Locust Valley), as the bout was knotted at 4-4, before Mongiello applied a tight bar-arm half to secure the fall at the 4:37 mark. Both Kwaak and Mongiello are sophomore standouts.

MAT NOTES:

Veteran and recently inducted National Wrestling Hall-of-Fame coach Ralph Napolitano (25 years) of Brentwood had well over 100 wrestlers turn out for the upcoming season. Once again, the Indians will have a formidable team with a solid wrestler in every weight class.

Interesting dual meet on the upcoming schedule with East Islip visiting Sayville on Friday, December 9th at 6PM at the Old Junior HS (Greeley Avenue).
