EAST ISLIP WINS 2023 SUFFOLK COUNTY DIVISION I DUAL MEET 

CHAMPIONSHIPS OVER BRENTWOOD 29-27 ​​​

Top ranked Sebastion Regis of East Islip picks up the fall at 285 pounds and put the Redmen on the board as they went on to defeat Brentwood 29-27.

East Islip's Chris Trahey won 9-7 in overtime at 145 pounds.

East Islip's Justin Shayew won 5-0 at 138 pounds.

Top ranked Jason Kwaak scored a 10-4 decision at 132 pounds.

    In the championship final, unbeaten and top-ranked East Islip (25-0) edged defending  dual champion Brentwood (23-2), 29-27,in a thrilling dual amongst the premier teams in Suffolk County, held before a packed crowd at Bay Shore HS.

    EI won six bouts and Brentwood tallied seven wins, the paper thin difference was the bonus points for East Islip. This meet featured a great display of competitiveness, desire and sportmanship, in retrospect, all the wrestlers in this classic dual were winners.


    The dual meet started at 189 pounds, where Brentwood's Julien Perez (26-5) rallied with a third period double leg takedown against EI's James Sturek (34-3) and emerged with an 8-6 win. The Indians recorded a pin by Chris Ayala at the 3:00 mark at 215. EI responded as state finalist, junior Sebastian Regis (37-1) flattened his opponent with a bar-arm and a 45 second fall at 285 pounds. At 102, freshman Rocco DeStefano (31-4) registered a pin to give the Redman an early 12-9 lead in the team score.


     The Indians then reeled off four consecutive victories; Jason Euceda (29-2), with a first period pin at 110, a hard-fought 1-0 decision by Kendrick Pellici (25-4) over Dylan Aristides (25-8) at 118, Derek Lopez (126) and sophomore standout Jason Kwaak (28-1) with a 10-4 win against Logan Alfalla (25-4) in the 132-pound bout and gave Brentwood a comfortable 24-12 lead.


     The well-balanced EI squad posted a series of key wins, starting at 138 with Justin Shayew (32-3) via a 5-0 shutout, Chris Trahey (145) with a pivotal takedown for an exciting 9-7 OT decision and Anthony Avitabile (34-1) tech fall at 152, before Stephen Coleman (36-3) recorded a 1:26 fall at 160 pounds and gave his team a 29-24 lead. 


     In final bout of the dual, Brentwood's JC Almendora had an 11-4 verdict at 172 and East Islip held on for a 29-27 victory. It was the Redmen's first county dual meet title, it all came to fruition for head coach Mike Longobardi (18 years) and able assistant Joe Esposito.
