MAT NOTES:
Defending county champions Wantagh pushed six wrestlers into the championship finals and hold a commanding lead over Long Beach and MacArthur. The Warriors are paced by the Clem twins; Anthony (40-4, 106-17 career) and Joseph (36-5, 114-12). Anthony hit a slick ankle pick takedown and then used a barrage of tilts and posted a fall at the 3:17 mark against Eric Gendlin (Hewlett). In the marquee match-up of the semi-final round Joseph was pitted against reigning state king, Joseph Manfredi (42-2) of Herricks. Joseph opened the scoring with a strong double leg takedown and then secured the victory with a key third period takedown with an upper body scramble and emerged with a 7-2 decision. In the top tier is Calhoun's top-seeded Ray Adams (40-4, 106-20) who scored repeatedly with low single leg takedowns and applied a bar arm for a 3:14 fall against Ben Marmor of Syosset.
LB has a lightweight tandem of seventh-grader Ethan Andreula (34-6) and returning state king, freshman Dunia Sibomana-Rodriguez (34-5). Andreula scored with first period double leg takedown and edged Oceanside's eighth-grader Chace Morris (Oceanside), 3-1, and Sibomana-Rodriguez applied a tight bar-arm to secure the fall over Jake Strianese (Oceanside), he seeks his second county crown in the finals. In another interesting bout, Wantagh's top-ranked Ryan Arbeit was embroiled in an action packed bout vs Santiago Pelaez (Levittown Division) and had a comfortable 10-2 lead before a stunning headlock brought the score to 10-8. Arbeit rallied and posted a 4:42 pin in the back-and-forth battle.
Upper weights that were impressive were Wantagh's #1 ranked Noah Corwin who flattened Luke Anfossi (LB) for a first period fall and defending county champion Kwasi Bonsu (Baldwin) defeated junior Angel Flores (Westbury), 8-1, he will face tough Eric Carlson (Manhasset) who had a convincing 16-0 tech fall over William Henry of Syosset.
