MAT NOTES:

     Suffolk County dual meet champion East Islip won the Section XI Championships with148 points over rival Brentwood (121) and a strong Miller Place squad with 119. 5 points. The Redmen were paced by state finalist junior Sebastian Regis (47-1) who registered four falls and cruised to the county crown. 


     In an all-Hauppauge county final and a battle of sophomores, top-seeded Connor Sheridan (32-2, 63-10) defeated Gina Manta (30-7, 53-16), 4-1, for the 102-pound county title. The Eagles also added another champion, tough Frankie Volpe (39-3, 136-29) dominated the 152-pound bracket and emerged with a solid 7-1 verdict in the final. Head coach, the legendary Chris Messina, is in his 43rd year at the helm.


     Reigning state champion Matt Marlow (37-0, 117-8 career) a junior from Northport registered a 19-2 tech fall in the quarterfinals and a second period pin over Brentwood's Kendrick Pellici (32-5) in the semi-finals. In the county final he posted a 21-6 tech fall over All-State performer senior Sean Campbell (31-4). Marlow was voted the OSW Award in the tournament.


    Bellport seventh-grader Camryn Howard (42-1) posted three shutout victories, amongst his four wins and capture the gold medal at 126 pounds, his teammate, rugged Jaiden Green (39-2) had four falls, including two under a minute and bulldozed his way the 215-pound title.


     The other unbeaten wrestler in the tournament was state-placer Nick LaMorte (40-0, 171-32) of Rocky Point. LaMorte used a repertoire of tight cross-face cradles and bar-arms, he clamped his opponent at the 3:47 mark of the 138-pound final.


     The toughest pig tail bout saw unseeded junior Jason Euceda of Brentwood defeat Rocky Point junior Aidan Donahue (34-7),13-6, at 110 pounds. Euceda advanced to the gold medal match and Donahue wasn't eligible for the consolation bracket and an opportunity to vie for all-county accolades. Euceda (37-2) won five bouts en route to the county championship and upended defending county champion Mason Mangialino (38-5), 3-0, in the title bout.
